Interview with L’illon (singer/songwriter, USA)

L'illon - it's not only the name of a new music genre, it's also the name of a Washington based singer/ songwriter with a great voice and soul touching songs.

CL: Hello L’illon, you are a Washington based singer/songwriter with a great voice and soul touching songs. Can you please be so kind and introduce yourself to our audience?

L’illon: Hi everyone, this is L’illon from Washington DC ( my name rhymes with Dylan in case you were wondering). It’s a privilege to be able to extend a big HELLO to all the Culture Load listeners and fans and to introduce my debut album ‘Warrior Angel’.

CL: It is said that your music is somehow a new style/ music genre. What exactly makes your way of music special/different? How would you describe your music style in your own words?

L’illon: My music, which I have coined as Lucid Pop, is a new sub-genre in pop music. It consists of underlying classical elements which I weave into a modern pop fabric of music. I want to bring a new spark of sensuality and vibrancy coupled with positive messages to all…so that everyone can feel cool, modern and sensual in their own skin.

CL: Do you write all your songs by yourself?

L’illon: Yes, I am the composer and writer of all of my music and lyrics. Melodies and words come to me simultaneously and if I do not have a piece of paper and pen available at that moment, then the tune goes back into the atmosphere. Once I had to use a lipstick and napkin to catch that song… and guess which song it was? ‘Warrior Angel’!

CL: Give us an insight of how you’re writing new songs.

L’illon: New songs come when I least expect them. For example, it can be after a rain storm, during a long night when I haven’t been able to close my eyes and get some sleep, or even walking down the street talking to people. Inspirations come like lightening bolts… whenever…wherever. I feel them and then the essence of the song and the nature of the melody start to crystallize in my mind.

CL: Last November you released your first full length album called “Warrior Angel”. How long did it take you to compose and record this album?

L’illon: The material for my album, “Warrior Angel”, was composed before recording began and 2 songs were composed during recording of the album. However, the arrangements for the songs took longer and this required long studio sessions over a period of many months. However, I did manage to sneak away for a couple of R&Rs (rest and relaxation).

To describe a little further, each arrangement around a song was crafted to form a specific mood and situation.

For example, ‘Love Story’, the first track, sets the stage of a party atmosphere with many surprises.

The second track , ‘Shy Guy’, is a message to everyone that shy men are hot.

‘I Wonder’, my love ballad, introduces the age old question: will you be mine?

‘Tu Solo Tu’, my Lucid Pop tango, is a song that one can dance and romance to for hours.

‘Thief of the Night’ is my anthem to bad boys.

‘Navigate Me Home’ is for the love traveler who gets lost.

‘Smile Once More’ is the hope for those who have loved and lost and will love again.

‘Sweet Surrender’ is an enigma. The lyrics are metaphors and it is a puzzle to be discovered.

‘Untouchable’ is for all the dreamers flying high. They really do reach the top.

And my title track ‘Warrior Angel’ reminds us of the good that is in each one of us.

CL: Music business is a tough business. Do you make your way with or without a label?

L’illon: I have been independent from the beginning…it can get rough and tough…but doing it on my own has enabled me to savor every moment of the process.. Granted,what lies ahead …well.. I guess that will be a surprise.

CL: What are your plans for your future as a singer/songwriter?

L’illon: I want to record more albums…I already have titles for the next three, including a Christmas album, and much of the music has already been written. Also, I want to go on tour to all of the continents and perform…. Germany, I hope to see you soon! Much Luv from Washington.
